Centerville History

Settled 1847 • Named for sitting dead-center between its neighbors

Thomas Grover settled along Deuel Creek in 1847, and the community went by Deuel Creek and then Cherry Creek — until an 1850 survey found the town sat exactly halfway between Farmington and Bountiful. “Centerville” stuck, and the city incorporated in 1915.

Worth Knowing

  • The Co-op: the Centerville Co-op (est. 1869) ran for over 70 years; its 1903 building still stands at Main & Center
  • The stagecoach stop: an 1866 Wells Fargo station later became Elkhorn Hall, a community gathering place
  • The Whitaker Museum: a pioneer-era home on Main Street, now city-owned with exhibits and cemetery walking tours
