Sunset History
Named for the view • Incorporated 1935
Around 1916, local women admiring the colors over the Great Salt Lake gave this town its name: Sunset. The area — previously called Sandridge, The Range, The Basin, and The Summit — incorporated in 1935 and boomed in the 1940s alongside the Ogden Arsenal and Hill Air Force Base next door.
Worth Knowing
- Small and complete: Sunset measures roughly 1.9 by 0.6 miles and is nearly fully built out
- The Hill effect: population held near 600 until the base-driven booms pushed it to ~6,000
- Shared roots: Sunset and Clinton both grew out of the same “Summit” settlement
