North Salt Lake’s Nights Out on Hold for 2027: What City Records Show
North Salt Lake’s themed Nights Out at Legacy Park are on hold for 2027 while the City Council decides whether to keep them. Residents can still weigh in, and the council has several meetings left this year.
How we got here
- Aug. 25: The city’s Civic Events Committee voted 3–0, with two members absent, to ask the City Council to review discontinuing the Nights Out events and keeping regular food truck nights in 2027. A committee member cited staff time and taxpayer cost for events focused on specific groups. Another suggested a single multicultural event instead. (Committee minutes)
- Sept. 15: The council took up the recommendation, and city staff presented cost and attendance data. (Agenda packet)
- Oct. 6: “Consideration of Nights Out Events for 2027” returned to the council agenda. (Oct. 6 agenda)
FOX 13 reported that Mayor Brian Horrocks raised concerns about the city being obligated to promote events whose messages leaders may not want to endorse, and that the city attorney is reviewing how the events should proceed. Official minutes from Oct. 6 have not been posted yet. The meeting audio is available on the state’s public notice site.
What the events are
Nights Out run on Monday evenings at Legacy Park alongside the regular food trucks and vendor fair. Residents propose an event and volunteer to chair it. Proposals go through the Civic Events Committee and then to the City Council. The 2026 lineup was Pride (June 1), America 250 (June 8), Juneteenth (June 15), Back to School (Aug. 6), A Bolder Way Forward (Sept. 14) and Latino Heritage (Sept. 21). The police-sponsored Night Out Against Crime is a separate event.
By the numbers
- Each event is allocated a $1,000 budget for supplies, equipment and music.
- Staff tallied about $10,200 in combined hourly labor and supplies for the six events, roughly $7,800 in labor and $2,400 in supplies. Exempt staff and elected officials’ time is not included.
- Average Monday attendance in 2026 was about 508 on a regular food truck night and about 1,109 on a Nights Out night.
