Sunset’s Free Landfill Voucher for Yard Waste Ends Oct. 15: What to Know
Sunset residents who still have a pile of branches, leaves or garden trimmings waiting for a dump run have a little over two weeks left to use the city’s free landfill voucher. The program closes for the year on Oct. 15.
How the voucher works
On top of regular automated garbage pickup, Sunset City offers the Davis Landfill Voucher Program. Each household can get one voucher per year from the City Offices at 200 W. 1300 N. You load your green waste, take it to the Davis Landfill, hand over the voucher, and the city pays the landfill charge for that load.
The program runs from March 15 through Oct. 15, so a household that has not used its voucher yet this year still has time.
What you can and cannot bring
The city says the voucher is strictly for yard cleanup and green waste. Items that are not allowed under the voucher include:
- Toxic, hazardous or flammable materials such as pesticides, herbicides, solvents, chemicals, paint, motor oil and gasoline
- Tires and batteries
- Televisions, refrigerators, freezers, computers and computer monitors
Residents can still take other items to the landfill, but at their own cost. For questions about household hazardous waste, the city points residents to Wasatch Integrated Waste Management at 801-614-5650.
Who can use it
Vouchers are for residential use only. The city specifically says businesses, owners of rental properties and commercial contractors may not use the program.
Landfill hours
According to the city’s program page, the landfill is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday during summer hours, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday during winter hours. With the season changing, it is worth confirming current hours before you load up.
Why it matters
