Layton Secondary Water Is Off for the Season, and Outdoor Watering Has Ended
If you live in Layton and your sprinklers have gone quiet, that’s by design. Layton City shut down its secondary water system on Sept. 15, 2026, and says outdoor irrigation is no longer permitted after that date — whether you use secondary water or culinary (drinking) water.
That second part is the one that catches people. Hooking a hose or sprinkler up to the tap in the house is not a workaround; the city’s notice applies to both systems.
Why the season ended early
The city pointed to below-normal snowpack and spring runoff, followed by a hot and dry summer. Secondary water is the untreated irrigation water many Layton neighborhoods use for lawns and gardens, and shutting it down protects what remains of the supply heading into fall and winter.
The city’s notice does not describe exceptions (for example, hand-watering new trees or gardens), penalties, or when irrigation service will resume next year. If you have a specific situation, check with Layton City before watering.
What residents can do now
- Turn off automatic sprinkler timers so they don’t run on the culinary line.
- Plan to winterize and blow out sprinkler lines on your normal fall schedule.
- Check whether your home is on secondary water using the city’s secondary water service area map.
