Millcreek Junior High Earns National PTA Honor; Muir Elementary Runs Past $25,000
Two Bountiful schools picked up good news in late September: Millcreek Junior High earned a national PTA honor, and Muir Elementary students ran their way to a fundraising total of more than $25,000. Both were reported by Davis School District.
Millcreek Junior High named a PTA National School of Excellence
Millcreek Junior High (245 E. 1000 South) received the PTA National School of Excellence designation. The honor lasts two years and recognizes schools and PTAs that build strong partnerships between families and the school, according to the district’s announcement.
The work started with a survey of Millcreek families about how the school communicates and where parents wanted more involvement. Parents, teachers and administrators then acted on the results:
- A new monthly newsletter and an updated school website.
- A bigger social media presence.
- Communications translated into Spanish.
- For the first time, three student-leadership representatives sitting on the PTSA board.
The district says PTA membership at Millcreek grew by more than 300% last year, and families logged more than 800 volunteer hours. The award was presented at a ceremony with the Utah PTA president and Bountiful’s mayor.
Muir Elementary’s Laps for Lions tops $25,000
About 600 kindergarten through sixth-grade students at Muir Elementary (2275 S. Davis Blvd.) ran laps around the school for the annual Laps for Lions fundraiser. Donations from parents, grandparents and neighbors pushed the total past $25,000, the district reported. When rain moved in, the younger students finished their laps indoors on a hallway obstacle course. The money goes to field trips and other PTO activities this school year.
Coming up Friday: Statewide Read-A-Thon
Students across Davis School District, including Bountiful’s schools, will set aside time during the school day on Friday, Oct. 2 for the Statewide Read-A-Thon. The district is encouraging families to keep it going at home by reading together.
