Layton Hospital Opens New Mammography Suite, Bringing Breast Cancer Screening Closer to Home in Davis County
Davis County women have a new, closer-to-home option for breast cancer screening. Intermountain Health has opened a new mammography suite at its Layton hospital, celebrating the completion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 14 attended by caregivers and community partners.
The expanded suite offers both screening and diagnostic mammograms, plus breast ultrasound and newly added breast MRI services. Until now, many residents traveled to larger hospitals in Ogden or Salt Lake City for that level of imaging.
The change matters because Utah lags much of the country on screening. Fewer than 65% of women age 40 and older in the state get an annual mammogram — a rate that ranks 44th in the nation, according to Intermountain. Bringing screening and diagnostics nearer to where people live is meant to remove one of the most common barriers: time.
Care that stays close, with backup when it’s needed
Layton Hospital will coordinate with Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden so patients can have screenings and diagnostics done in Layton and, if a biopsy is needed, follow through at McKay-Dee. Radiologist David Peterson, MD — himself a Davis County resident — pointed to the stakes of early detection, saying he has “seen many, many lives saved by mammograms.”
For the hospital’s team, the project is also personal. Chief nursing officer Kristy Giles shared that her mother survived breast cancer three times after a mammogram caught it early — a reminder, she said, of why expanding the service in the community mattered.
How to schedule a mammogram
Residents can schedule a mammogram at Intermountain Layton Hospital by calling 801-543-6000 or booking online through Intermountain Health. Many insurance plans cover annual screening mammograms for women 40 and older; check with your own provider about coverage and how often you should be screened.
