SUMMARY:Anthropocene: Landscapes of Use\, Memory\, and Transformation
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores how artists interpret and engage with the land—its forms\, histories\, and transformations.Through photography\, sculpture\, installation\, and moving image\, the featured works reflect on ancestral agriculture and land practices\, modern infrastructure\, environmental change\, displacement\, and ecological systems\, while considering personal\, political\, cultural\, and spiritual relationships to place.\nThe term Anthropocene is used to describe a proposed geological epoch defined by the profound and lasting impact of human activity on the Earth’s systems. This exhibition considers the landscape not as a passive backdrop\, but as an active record—shaped by use\, intervention\, and memory.\nAcross the exhibition\, artists trace the visible and invisible forces that shape place: extraction and preservation\, erosion and renewal\, habitation and displacement. In Utah and throughout the American West\, landscapes carry layered histories of settlement\, labor\, and stewardship that continue to inform how place is experienced\, remembered\, and understood.\nRather than presenting landscape as stable or untouched\, the exhibition reveals it as dynamic—shaped by competing uses\, pressures\, and histories. Salt accumulates\, structures rise and erode\, images document and distort. Across scales—from the intimate to the monumental—artists examine how human presence alters not only the physical environment\, but also our cultural\, political\, and spiritual relationships to it.\nAcross these works\, landscape emerges as both subject and consequence—shaped not only by natural forces\, but by the persistent imprint of human presence.\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:Real Grief | Potential Grief
DESCRIPTION:Real Grief | Potential Grief by Sydney Porter Williams\nExhibition Run Dates: 06.26 – 07.24\nGrief has a long reach. Real grief lives in my body\, as an intense weight on my chest as a lost loved one’s song loops in my mind. Potential grief took root in me through generational trauma\, inherited before I had words for it. I conceptualize generational trauma as a desperate hand gripping my arm\, ever-present and controlling. Inherited grief and the patterns left by abuse can keep people enmeshed in a family system long after the source of harm is gone\, shaping identity in ways that are hard to see and harder to separate from.\nThis installation holds what remains. I work with closely cropped photographs of hands from generations of my family. These gestures are difficult to categorize as either loving or controlling\, but they carry the weight of substance abuse\, loss\, and cycles of harm that move through the people I come from.\nThe sound weaves together songs and voices of my family over time\, filling the space with what is cherished and what is feared to lose. A childhood crib overflows with textiles preserved across generations\, and a holy water jar from a Last Rites box contains remnants of an early pregnancy I lost years ago. Medication bottles line the walls\, lit from within like votive candles\, and a canopy of embroidered flowers hangs overhead\, at once sheltering and shrouding the contents of this installation.\nReal Grief | Potential Grief explores how experiences of loss can create a constant anticipation of future grief\, when that loss has not yet occurred. It moves between what has been lost and what might be lost. It traces how grief\, both real and anticipated\, shapes the self\, while documenting the slow formation of an identity that is no longer fully defined by what came before.\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:Book Launch Party for Unraveling Fate!
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the release of award-winning author Kelly Fae Wilson’s newest book\, Unraveling Fate! 28 August 2026\, 5–7 PM   Get your copy of the book\, get it signed by the author\, play games\, and enjoy a very special guest performance by sensational vocalist\, Laura Frisby. (I mean\, the main character of the book is an opera singer so we have to have music at this party\, right??)   Hosted by Davis County’s own indie bookstore (yay indies!) The Hollow.1588 S 2000 W Ste 101 Syracuse UT 84075   Lyrical\, enchanting\, Unraveling Fate is a contemporary romantic fantasy of hidden music magic\, a curse no one will name\, and a young singer determined to write her own future—no matter what Fate has planned.Cadenza Cavalieri has one plan: become an opera star on her own terms\, and ignore the strange music only she can hear—the bass that thrums up through the ground\, the moon that sings like distant strings. So when her estranged mother dangles a career-making role in Venice\, Cadenza takes a last-ditch gig singing the national anthem at a racetrack to fund the trip\, certain she’s in control of where her life is headed. She’s wrong. The family she goes to work for knows exactly what the earthsong is\, and when the owner’s son turns up out of nowhere claiming to be cursed\, the music she’s spent her life ignoring roars to life. Caught between a found family that feels more like home than anything her mother is offering and an ancient evil closing in on the people she’s come to love\, Cadenza can no longer pretend the earthsong isn’t hers. She’ll have to master it—or watch her whole world unravel into silence.\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.
